From butcher to barber

Meet Greg Patterson, our barbering tutor in Napier, with a cutting edge story about how he ended up in the barbering industry.


Greg enjoyed being a butcher for 18 years, then when his parents bought a salon, after a death of a good friend, he thought that this would be a good opportunity to make a change in his career. He then learned all the fundamental skills from his sister, who had been a hairdresser for 35 years and local barbers. He worked on the floor and achieved his apprenticeship.


We asked Greg a few more question about his career and the role that he playing at Premier.





How long have you been tutoring? What do you like love most about your job now?

I have been tutoring for 2 ½ years at Premier. Working with these tutors has been amazing they back me up, they are empowering people, witnessing self awareness and motivate me to keep learning.

"Highlight of my career so far is being the best that I can be. Mentoring, volunteering cuts for cancer awareness."

If you can choose to be any animal which one would you be and why?

My dog, he use to be a DOC kiwi recovery dog and now he is just lives the dream.


Who or what is your inspiration?

Work ethic wise - my parents, from taking a small salon and turning it into a successful cutting bar and hair salon.


What’s your best advice to someone entering this industry?

Never stop learning. Aim high, never think you can’t do something. Be prepared to share. You will meet a wide diversity of people from all nations of the world.


How do you feel about Premier?
