I have worked in the hairdressing industry for 25 years and have done extensive training with Vidal Sassoon and Toni & Guy. A few exciting things I've done in my career are fashion shoots, fashion shows, Fashion Week, presenters hair for a well known local TV channel, commercials (doing hair backstage), makeovers for magazines as well as owning my own hairdressing salon.
Now I’m tutor...I have the opportunity to pass on all of that knowledge and experience to young aspiring hairdressers, wanting to be creative professionals in a fun, high energy and exciting work environment.
We asked Alicia a few more questions about her past and why she enjoy being a hairdresser so much.
What made you want to become a hairdresser?
I was always involved in cutting my friends’ hair, styling my mom's hair and I really enjoyed experimenting with hair, and that’s how I know that this is what I want to do for the rest of my life.
What’s the highlight of your career so far?
There have been many things I have been apart of - doing hair for Top Billing, a well-known TV Show and magazine in South Africa, seeing your name on tv or magazine really stand out as a big highlight for me.
What is your favourite part of your job?
I have been tutoring now for almost 2 years and what I enjoy most is when I see our students suddenly grasp what I have been teaching, and they get that proud and confident look on their faces. I feel I have done my job well then :-)
When you are not at work, where would we find you?
I have a busy social life relaxing at friends homes. In the summer time we always go to the beach. Doing as much as I can with my family.
Where do you find your inspiration from?
Adrine Vohra in a professional manner, I admire her drive and motivation.
I also find inspiration in everyday things, people I meet, travelling, fashion on the streets, etc
What’s your best advice to someone entering this industry?
You have got to work hard, put in your time for your training and always have fun with your career, try new things, follow social media and keep up the trend.
What is your favourite part of the day and why?
I must say midday, it's when I have the most energy.
